Case Significance

Ang Hong Wei and others v Ang Teng Hai and another [2024] SGHC 14 was decided in the General Division of the High Court of Singapore by Christopher Tan JC on 19 January 2024, in Originating Claim No 362 of 2023. The claimants, who are the deputies of Mdm Poh Gek Eng, had brought HC/SUM 2583/2023 for summary judgment against the two defendants for $496,700 plus interest and costs. The 1st defendant is Mdm Poh's step-son and the 2nd defendant is his son. The dispute traced back to a 20 May 2009 agreement under which the defendants agreed to purchase Mdm Poh's property.

The Assistant Registrar below had allowed the summary judgment application in part, granting final judgment of $331,700 (with interest at 5.33% per annum from the date of claim to judgment) and unconditional leave to defend the balance of $168,300. Cross-appeals followed: HC/RA 234/2023 was filed by the defendants and HC/RA 235/2023 by the claimants. After hearing parties on 18 and 26 December 2023, Christopher Tan JC allowed both cross-appeals in part.
