About the District Court

Part of the State Courts

The District Courts are part of the State Courts, which handle more than 80 per cent of Singapore's overall caseload each year and more than 90 per cent of its criminal caseload.

Some District Courts and Magistrates' Courts sit as specialised courts, including the Criminal Mentions Court, the Community Criminal Court, the Traffic Court, the Night Courts and the Protection from Harassment Court.

What it hears

Civil claims worth more than $60,000 and up to $250,000, or up to $500,000 for claims arising from road traffic accidents or personal injuries from industrial accidents.

Criminal cases where the maximum term of imprisonment does not exceed 10 years, or which are punishable with a fine only.

Appeals

Criminal and civil appeals from the District Courts are heard by the General Division of the High Court.
