She joined Allen and Gledhill LLP, practising in the areas of civil and commercial litigation and arbitration, and was made a Partner in 2010. In March 2018, Justice Tan moved from private practice to join the Legal Service. She served as Head (Advocacy Group) and (concurrently, since April 2021) Deputy Chief Counsel (Civil Division) at the Attorney-General's Chambers, conducting litigation in the areas of civil, criminal, and public law and public inquiries
